Chapter Two January 17, 2008 Culture o System of meaning and behavior that defines the way of life for a given group in society o Material vs. nonmaterial Material culture: Nonmaterial culture: o Culture is: Shared: always shared on some level; people hold it in common together. Learned: it’s not inherent; it’s something we pick up along the way. Symbolic: aspects of our culture that mean something; wearing orange at OSU. Relative: culture is not the same everywhere, and it is not the same over time. o Elements of culture: Language: here we all speak English; else where they don’t always speak English. Sometimes people attach a different value to a word than we do. Norms: specific cultural expectations on how to behave in a given situation; “mores” strict norms that restrict moral and ethical behavior; “folkways” general standards and behaviors adhered by a group; not as strictly enforced.
