Modern Middle East- Readings 1. Is There a Middle East? 1/15/07 The Middle East is more than a geographic identifier. It is used to describe a large swath of people who have very different loyalties and values. The Turkish educated and elite have long tried to associate with Europe and the West and forsake their Islamic heritage. Iranians are turning to the technology and capitalism of the West and look to pre-Islam for their glorious old civilization. For both Islam is a class thing, followed most by the poorest and least by the wealthiest. The influence of Western education suggests that the Western influence will grow. Many people think the Arab world = Middle East. However, there are more non-Muslims in the Arab world where Islam is thought to be supreme than in Iran where the influence of Islam is not as apparent. Many Christian Arab intellectuals praise aspects of Islam while the least religious Muslims Turks and Iranians complain about how Islam ruins things. Iranian and Turkish national heroes and essence come from pre-Islam. For Arabs, Muslim or not, Muhammad and his four clerics are the heroes.
