The purpose of this experiment was to determine what factors affect chemical equilibrium. These affects were observed by adding reagents to an aqueous solution of Fe 3+ and NCS - , which form a complex ion in an equilibrium reaction, Fe 3+ (aq) + NCS - (aq) ↔ FeNCS 2+ (aq). The objective was to observe the reaction that occurred when various reagents were added to the solution. Based on these observations the team was then able to determine the direction of the reaction, and the chemistry taking place in the reaction. Experimental: The first step was to create a mixture of Fe 3+ and NCS - by filling a beaker with 100mL of water, and then four drops of Fe 3+ and four drops of NCS - were added. A solution of iron thicyanate, (FeNCS 2+ (aq)) was formed in this solution. Eight different test tubes were filled with the same amount of the solution created. To the first test tube a solution of 1 M Fe(NO 3 ) 3 (aq) was added until a change was observed in the test tube . To a second test tube a solution of a 1 M NH 4 NCS(aq) was added expecting to see another change. To the solution in the third test tube 0.10 M SnCl 2 (aq) was added. To the fourth, fifth, and sixth test tube solutions of 0.10 M AgNO 3 (aq), Na 2 HPO 4 (aq), and 1 M NH 3 (aq) were added respectively until a change was observed in the test tubes. The solution on the seventh test tube was heated with a Bunsen burner. Finally, the solution in the last
