DESCARTES HANDOUT GALILEO AND THE REAL PROPERTIES OF OBJECTS--THE RISE OF THE NEW PHYSICS, THE NEW PROBLEMS OF PERCEPTION, AND THE RETURN OF SCEPTICISM, DESCARTES AND THE TECHNIQUE OF METHODOLOGICAL DOUBT--DOUBT AND MATHEMATICAL KNOWLEDGE THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PAINTER PASSAGE IN MEDITATION I. THE CONNECTION TO THE DISTINCTION BETWEEN SIMPLE AND COMPLEX IDEAS--SIMPLE IDEAS IN THE MIND COME FROM (ARE CAUSED BY) OBJECTS THAT HAVE THE POWER TO PRODUCE THEM--EITHER BY BEING APPROPRIATELY PLACED (ON THE FAMILIAR CHAIN OF BEING) OR BY THEMSELVES HAVING THE PROPERTIES CORRESPONDING TO THE IDEAS---PERCEIVING A RED OBJECT (RED IMAGE OR RED OBJECT) CAN GIVE YOU THE IDEA OF RED--OF WHAT IT IS TO BE RED (SO CAN AN ALL POWERFUL DECEIVING DEMON--DESCARTES' MALEVOLENT GENII--DEMON). SO, TOO, PERHAPS, CAN THE MIND WHEN INTERACTING WITH AN APPROPRIATE PHYSICAL OBJECT OR SET OF CONDITIONS. IF THE IDEA OF RED IS NOT A SIMPLE IDEA THEN ONE CAN BUILD IT UP--THE MIND CAN CONSTRUCT THE IDEA AS IT CONSTRUCTS THE IDEA OF A UNICORN OR A DRAGON OUT OF IDEAS IT ALREADY HAS. DESCARTES THEN SUGGESTS THAT SIMPLE IDEAS APPLYING TO PHYSICAL OBJECTS ARE REALLY THE IDEAS THAT ARE INVOLVED IN GALILEO'S DISCUSSION OF THE REAL QUALITIES OF PHYSCIAL OBJECTS OR CAUSED BY THOSE WHEN PERCEIVING A PHYSICAL OBJECT—THOSE ARE THE PRIMARY QUALITIES--OF EXTENSION, SHAPE, QUANTITY, MOTION--THE IDEAS THAT ARE EMPLOYED IN PHYSICAL SCIENCE AND CORRESPOND TO PROPERTIES THAT THE PHYSCIAL OBJECT ACTUALLY HAS. THE IDEA OF EXTENSION IN THE MIND CORRESPONDS TO (REPRESENTS, RESEMBLES EVEN) THE QUALITY OF EXTENSION IN THE OBJECT. THE IDEA OF RED DOES NOT RESEMBLE OR CORRESPOND TO THE PRIMARY QUALITIES IN THE OBJECT BUT IS CAUSED IN THE MIND BY AN OBJECT WITH THOSE QUALITIES BEING PERCEIVED. (THERE IS, CERTAINLY, A RED IMAGE BUT THAT

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

I cannot even describe how much Course Hero helped me this summer. It’s truly become something I can always rely on and help me. In the end, I was not only able to survive summer classes, but I was able to thrive thanks to Course Hero.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
