Augustine & Anselm Handout Augustine’s refutation of skepticism Knowledge of self, awareness of the “immediate data” of consciousness. Distinguishing consciousness as a mental “act” intending an object—Thinking of x-- from consciousness of the “act” of being conscious of the object—“self-consciousness” and “reflection”—awareness of an object as opposed to awareness of consciousness of an object . Awareness (knowledge) of conscious acts, awareness of objects (sensations), awareness of self—all known with certainty. Augustine is “immediately aware” of— directly aware of—his own conscious states—thus of the fact that he is conscious—is a conscious being. So it is obvious that he is conscious, that he exists, that he “is alive”— hence to doubt that he exists is to establish that he exists. It cannot sensibly be doubted. Thus Augustine’s Cogito “argument”. The emphasis on “will”—as if will (hence free will) and not intellect is the key characteristic of a human being.

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
