EXAM #1 STUDY GUIDE CHAPTER ONE Feedback: Verbal or nonverbal response to a message. The concept of feedback appeared first in interactive models of communication. It may be intentional or unintentional Noise: Anything that interferes with the intending meaning of communication: includes sounds (traffic) as well as psychological interferences (preoccupation). Noise may distort understanding. Noise is seen in the linear model. Questions: 1.Define Communication and explain the significance of each of the key terms in the definition. Communication: A systemic process in which the people interact with and through symbols to create and interpret meanings. Process: Communication is a process, which means that it is on going and dynamic. (It is hard to tell when it stops and where it starts.) Systems: Communication takes place within the systems. A system consists of interrelated parts that make up one another. Symbols: Communication is symbolic. We rely on symbols and give meaning to them. They are abstract, arbitrary, and ambiguous representations of other things. (ex. An engagement ring says I love you.) Abstraction-symbols are abstraction -symbols stand for things but are not what they stand for. Arbitrary- language groups assign symbols (words) as representations through consensual usage. There are 6,000 languages spoken today. Ambiguous (flexible)- the meaning of our symbols are flexible and contextual. Meanings: Meanings are the heart of communication. We do not find meaning in experience itself. Instead, we use symbols to create meaning. We actively construct meaning by interacting with symbols. We use symbols to create meanings. There are two levels of meaning. The Content Level: The literal message The Relationship Level: Expresses the relationship between communications. (In many cases the relationship level is more important than the content level. It often expresses a desire to connect with another person. 2. Explain the difference between discovered and constructed definitions. Discovered definitions: ex. F=MA (Newton) Constructed definitions: ex. “communication is a systemic process in which people interact through symbols to create and interpret meanings.” 3.Explain the difference between the content and relational levels of meaning.

Provide examples of each. The content level meaning contains the literal message. If a person knocks on you door and asks, “May I come in?” the content level meaning is that the person is asking your permission to enter. The relationship level of meaning expresses the relationship between communicators. In the example of a person asks, “May I come in?” if the person is smiling, you would probably conclude that the person is seeking friendly interaction. If they speak to you in an angry tone, you might interpret the relationship-level meaning signal that your supervisor is not satisfied with your work. (the content level is the same in both, but the relationship-level meaning differs.) 4.Be able to provide 3 models of communication, to identify the parts of each model,
