MENTAL MODELS INTRODUCTION : Mental model is a model that is constructed and analyzed within our human conscious mind about the causes, effects and interactions of the various components that describes how a system operates. System thinking allows us to look at the various components of the systems and to understand them, how they interact with each other and the output of the system. It’s very important distinction as systems results in outcomes that are always changing and quite complex. Human mind is very good at simulating the mental models which do represent a system. We often use our own understanding and since we are limited in understanding the complex systems we tend to simplify them. Skills require us to learn how to look at systems from different perspective. Many of us are not aware about how our mental models can simplify/distort our view of systems. In this paper, we define the mental model and how it will affect the system thinking. We will examine our own mental models and how they would negatively impact our ability to accurately predict and view complex systems. MENTAL MODELS : As defined by Jay Wright Forrester, “The image of the world around us, which we carry in our head, is just a model. Nobody in his head imagines all the world, government or country. He has only selected concepts, and relationships between them, and uses those to represent the real system”. Various industries had defined mental model is a mental simulation or mental representation of a human mind. Things get harder when we start thinking about complex systems. In the example of a market system price denotes the demand for a product in a market. When a recession hit in late 2008, merchants begin to face financial problems as customers stopped to purchasing their goods. During this time people are worried about the economy and stopped to spend and started to save money. This happened during the
