Introductory Sociology: Political and Economic Sociology Some Definitions State: The organization of political positions and the structure of political relations in society. o The state consists of people who exercise an effective monopoly in the use of physical coercion within a given territory. Government: The positions and people who occupy these positions of a state institution. o These individuals come and go, but the government, state and their relationship within other institutions remain intact. o Entails the political processes that have to do with the authoritative formulating of rules and policies that are binding and pervasive throughout society. Politics: The process by which people and groups exercise power over the state. Economy: comprises the structures, relationships, and activities that produce and distribute wealth in society. o It does this by organizing the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services. Corporation: A group of people authorized to work as an individual, pooling
