Behavior Diagrams The behavior diagrams provide a way for representing the dynamic relationships among the instances or objects that represent the business IS. They also allow the modeling of the dynamic behavior of individual objects throughout their lifetime . UML offers the following behavior diagrams: 1. Activity 2. Sequence 3. Communication 4. Interaction overview 5. Timing 6. Behavior State Machine 7. Protocol State Machine 8. Use Case Chapter 2. Introduction to Object-Oriented Systems Analysis and Design with UML 2.0 B - Unified Modeling Language (UML 2.0)

Use Case diagram: Introduction The Analysis of requirements needs to: Understand the requirements to be covered by the system, Express and formalize these requirements. Means for representing requirements in UML: Use Case (UC) diagrams: a UC diagram describe How the system will be used by the actors (users). + other diagrams.

Use Case diagram: Introduction Observation: The system is created to serve its users. Use Cases [ Jacobson 92]. Idea: describe the behavior of the system according to the viewpoint of its users . Behavior = {Actions} + {Reactions} User Requirement / action System Fonctionality / Reaction

Use Case diagram: Introduction Benefits of Use Cases: Involve users during the requirements gathering step Facilitate the structuring of user requirements by offering a simple and expressive representation. Facilitate the expression of requirements by users and communication with IT experts. Reduce the complexity and requirements identification .

Use Case diagram: Introduction Force users to defining the way (i.e., logic) they want to interact with the system. Avoid not useful and / not adapted specifications (do not go deeply in details). Set the boundaries (domain of study) and the objectives (demanded functionalities ) of the system.

Use Case diagram: Definitions Definition: a Use Case (UC) is a means of representation that describes a set of sequences of actions realized by the system , and producing a visible result for an actor. A UC represents a functional demand towards the entirely system . A UC corresponds to a specific way of how the system will be used . It represents a functionality triggered as a response to a stimulation of the system.

Use Case diagram: Definitions UML notation for UC: Place Order Manage Supplier Elaborate Estimate In practice, UC names are short verbal sentences ( active voice) which describe the actual behavior, in terms of vocabulary actually used by the system under modeling.
