PURPOSE The purpose of this experiment was to study the effects of adding a base or acid to salt to see if it will hydrolyze and also to find the base-neutralizing capacity and acid- neutralizing capacity of certain buffers. In Chemistry lecture, buffers, acids, bases and the way they react with each other have been studied extensively. Some of the laboratory techniques that were practiced here were testing the pH of some 1.0 M solutions with a pH electrode and also testing the pH of buffers consisting of weak acids and bases when a strong acid or base is added to it. PROCEDURE The procedure followed for this experiment can be found in the lab manual: Sprague, Alexander, Padolik, Steffel, Laboratory Experiments for First Year Chemistry, 5 th ed. pp. 19-3 to 19-4. RESULTS The results for this experiment can be found on the two report sheets and the sheet labeled Part A located in this packet. DISCUSSION
