Unformatted text preview: Shoulder Injuries Shoulder Anatomy CLAVICULAR FX • MOI: – blow to area – force from fall on shoulder or arm • S/s: CLAVICULAR FX • Tx: – RICE, – sling and swathe, – refer to physician, – prevent shock – usu. Immob 6-8 wks • Prev: – correct pads if collision sport • Misc: SCAPULAR FX • MOI: – direct blow (unlikely) – or force transmitted thru humerus, – can fx body, acromion, or coracoid • S/s: – pain incr. w/ shoulder mvt, – decr f’n, swelling, crepitus, SCAPULAR FX • Tx: – RICE, – sling and swathe, refer, – prevent shock, – support 3-4 weeks • Prev: – pads in collision sport • Misc: – not very common at all HUMERUS FX • MOI: – blow to area – fall on arm – from dislocation • S/s: – pain, decr f’n, crepitus, – deformity, swelling, – can’t rotate (IR/ER), – numbness/ tingling or decr. pulse if impinges on nerve/ artery HUMERUS FX • Tx: – RICE, immob, refer, – Tx shock – can be out 2-6 months • Prev: – have haeavy guns like mine • Misc: – if fx at supracondylar ridge it may resemble a, – if proximal may resemble a • (Spartan story)… ER story of kid STERNOCLAVICULAR (SC) SPRAIN • MOI: – blow to clavicle, – fall on shoulder, – shoulder forced into horizontal extension • S/s: – pain at SC, swelling – may have deformity if grade 2- 3, – decr f’n esp. horiz flex & abduct, Ouch! STERNOCLAVICULAR (SC) SPRAIN • Tx: – RICE, STP for sprains, – refer grade 2-3, – immob grade 2-3 for up to 3 wks, – must stabalize and refer post. Impingements immediately – Pad upon return • Prev: – pads in collision sport • Misc: – high incidence of recurrence b/c ligaments are damaged ACROMIOCLAVICULAR (AC) SPRAIN • MOI: – blow to shoulder • usually tip or lateral • fall on outstretched arm • S/s: – pain at AC, swelling – decr f’n & pain especially overhead and horizontal flexion, – if grade 2-3, – GR 3 tore coracoclavicular lig also ACROMIOCLAVICULAR (AC) SPRAIN • Tx: – RICE, STP for sprains, – sling 3-4 d’s for grade 1, 7-10 for GR 2, 2-3 wks for GR 3, – x-ray if GR 2-3,...
