Vilnits Rada Vilnits Laboratory 3 Chemistry 112 5 March 2008 Buffers: Acidic and Basic Solutions Abstract The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to prepare buffer solutions and see their capacities (week 1) and then test the buffer (week 2) to see if how we did the experiment was correct and the calculations come out to the pH that was initially predicted. Introduction This experiment was performed to make four (4) buffers and then see the capacity of each buffer; to see their capacities. Buffer capacity is the number of moles of acid or base addition to the solution that the solution (buffer) can withstand without changing the pH more than one unit. The experiment was performed by making four buffers of different concentration and quantity and then seeing each buffer’s capacity by titrating it. Background Information: 1. According to an online source, titration is a common laboratory method of quantitative/chemical analysis that can be used to determine the concentration of a known reactant. A reagent, called the titrant , of known concentration and volume is used to react with a solution of the analyte, whose concentration is not known in advance. Using a burette to add the titrant, it is possible to determine the exact amount that has been consumed when the endpoint is reached. The endpoint is the 1

Vilnits point at which the titration is complete, as determined by an indicator. This is the same volume as the equivalence point - the volume of added titrant at which the number of moles of titrant is equal to the number of moles of analyte. In the classic strong acid-strong base titration, the endpoint of a titration is the point at which the pH of the reactant is just about equal to 7, and often when the solution permanently changes color due to an indicator.
