Explain the importance of the terms applied and interdisciplinary as they help to define the field of child development.Applied: Is a practical importance; A scientific study that researches about child development. Interdisciplinary is because of the need to solve everyday problems concerning children, researchers from psychology, sociology, anthropology, biology, and neuroscience have joined together to create child development. 2. List the age periods researchers use to study child development, and cite and describe the three domains in which development is often divided. The age periods are the prenatal period, which is from conception to birth. Infancy and toddlerhood, which is, birth to 2 years old. Early childhood, which is from 2 - 6 years old. Middle childhood, which is age 6-11 years old. Last but not least is the adolescence, which are ages 11-18. Some researchers have even come up with a new period called emerging, which extends from 18 to the mid-to-late 20’s. The three domains are physical, cognitive and emotional. Physical development is when body size, proportions, appearance, functioning of body systems, perceptual and motor capacities, and physical health. Cognitive development is changes in intellectual abilities, including attention, memory, academic and everyday knowledge, problem solving, imagination, creativity, and language. Emotional and social development is changes in emotional communication, self-understanding, knowledge about other people, interpersonal skills, friendship, intimate relationships, and moral reasoning and behavior. 3. Explain the role of theories in understanding child development, describe the three basic issues on which major theories take a stand, and explain the concepts of plasticity and stability in development. The theories of development are described, explain, and predict. The three basic issues are, is development a continuous process or discontinuous Another basic issue is that does one general course of development characterize all children, or are there many possible courses, influenced by the contexts in which children grow up? The last basic issue is the nature-nurture controversy and is individual differences stable or characterized by substantial plasticity? The concepts of stability and plasticity are that plasticity is open to change in response to influential experiences. Stability is children who are high or low in a characteristic and will remain so at later ages. 4. Trace historical influences on modern theories of child development, from medieval times through the early twentieth century.
