MATERNAL CHILD HEALTH 2 Chapter 13 Question 1: Children are usually vulnerable to harm from environmental exposure due to two factors: increased exposures and increased vulnerability. In which case, infectious diseases and toxic exposures are the major environmental factors. The time when the children are most susceptible is at the start of conception through to childhood. Due to their small size, children have a higher exposure per kilogram of their body weight than adults (Kotch, 2012). Further vulnerability occurs due to vigorous growth and development of children, they witness elevated risks to environmental toxin exposure. Question 2 Intensive refers to when exposure to environmental toxin does not change regardless of the number of environmental toxin. Extensive refers to the when the exposure to environmental toxin changes because of the influence of the change in number of toxins. Pervasive refers to exposure because of spread throughout a population. Three reasons responsible for children’s exposure to toxin include: 1) increased exposure per kilogram of children’s body weight; 2) actions like hand-mouth and hand-object; 3) vigorous growth and development in children (Kotch, 2012) . Question 3 The Environmental Protection Agency Federal Environment Agency Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry.
