Experiment 5: Separations and AnalysisCHEM 121October 10, 2016Veronica GutierrezGabrielle Naughton
ObjectiveThe objective of experiment 5 was to utilize qualitative analysis and chromatography to separate the components of a simple mixture and identify the components in an unknown. Physical properties were used to separate the components of a mixture, while chemical properties and qualitative analysis were used to verify that a separation of the substances occurred. ProcedureIn this experiment, paper chromatography and physical properties were used to separate mixtures into their components. In the paper chromatography experiment, a drop, approximately 4mm in diameter, of three known solutions, one mixture and an unknown solution was placed on a line that was drawn in pencil 1.5 cm from the bottom of the paper on the mobile phase front. The paper which served as the solid through which the substances werecarried was the stationary phase. The end of the paper was then immersed in a aqueous solution of acetone and HCl, to a point just below the line drawn in pencil, 1.5 cm from the bottom of the paper. The liquid served as the mobile phase of the experiement. As the paper
