Caribbean music in a new modeBy Caribbean music in a new mode is meant its probe of the African past retained in thereligious rituals of this region. Such popular festivals as rara, carnival, junkannu, gambay taketheir roots in danced religions of Africa, in which there is no distinction between secular andsacred. The musical themes of the Caribbean region have a lot in common, since people had tofight for their freedom and independence in the past. Thus the main values are reflected in themusical themes, for example, resistance to oppression, pursuit of freedom, culturalacknowledgment. The manifestation of these values can be seen in the rituals like Vodou,Candomble, Kumina, Santeria as well as in popular dance-hall styles of Jamaican reggae, orBrazilian samba; in carnival music of Trinidad and Tobago: calypso and soca.
