1. What is Ekman transport? What direction (at what angle) will the average flow of the ocean in the Northern Hemisphere move with respect to the wind direction? 2. Why do gyres form? How does sea surface height factor in? Think in terms of forces involved. 3. Which direction (north/south) do northern hemisphere eastern/western ocean basin boundary currents flow? Do they transport warm or cold water? (Think about the Gulf Stream Current for example) 4. Do currents flow faster on eastern or western boundaries of ocean basins? What is vorticity and how does it factor in? 5. What physical characteristics of the ocean control density? 6. How do temperature, evaporation/precipitation, and wind direction influence salinity distributions in the global ocean (Is the Atlantic or Pacific saltier and why)? 7. How does surface ocean salinity vary in terms of latitudinal distribution (is salinity higher at the equator or the tropics)? How is this related to the processes of evaporation and precipitation? 8.
