Religion Exam Prep Mechanical Solidarity: small group, focusses on a symbol, everyone knows each other, not a lot of options, great devotion EX: Church Organic solidarity: weaker rituals, pluralism (free will), mutual tolerance, open- minded, more options, fairness and civility EX: Bureaucracy Solidarity: Pride in group membership, group made of confidence, trust, faith in group, readiness to give to to/fight for a group -after a tragedy or attack, mechanical solidarity spikes (ex: 9/11) RELIGION- rituals focused on the symbols of the sacred -generates mostly mechanical solidarity -organized and repeated Rituals-organized group efforts focussed on group symbol -gathering -boundaries -has to be impractical gathering -sensory( has tomake you feel like something happened) -shared focus of attention Scripted vs. Spontaneous -4/16 candle light is a spontaneous ritual -graduation is a scripted one Effective vs. Failed -strenuous vs. relaxed -classroom is a failed ritual because it is practical and has no physical activity -profane: something is normal or mundane (opposite of sacred) Ex: Justin Bieber and Hokie Football When solidarity is the outcome of a ritual: emotional energy confidence, strength identity/ exclusion boundaries of mutual obligation conformity Sacrifice as an outcome -conformity -selfless contributions sustain groups
