It states that he will no longer continue their affair and she is dumbfounded by his sudden halt of affection. With great stupor, Mme. Bovary contemplates whether her life is worth living. Flaubert uses many literary devices to portray Mme. Bovary’s heartbreaking situation that will eventually turn into an unfortunate series of events. Flaubert utilizes the motifs of light, negative emotion, and freedom to reveal Madame Bovary’s internal conflict. Flaubert employs the motif of light in various different aspects to reveal Madame Bovary’s internal conflict. In the passage, the light imagery shifts from a negative connotation to a positive connotation before and after she reaches the window. After she
reads the letter about the termination of her affair she is astounded and angry, “as if some fearful fire were behind her, Emma flew to her room terrified.” The fire (light imagery) is described as “fearful” and her reaction is “terrified” because her only reason to live is leaving her. The use of alliteration emphasizes the negative connotation associated with the “fearful fire”.
