political party interest group- do not make changes- try to get people already in govt to make changes Voting Behavior: Why people decide to vote and for whom? 1.VOTER TURNOUT: voting age population that votes- people who decide to go out and vote during an election -people with higher education tend to vote more -people 18-30 tend to vote the least -people 50-70 tend to vote the most -factors influencing turnout: education, income, age, gender, race, ethnicity, and interest 2.WHY IS TURNOUT LOW? -too busy -registration difficulty -absentee voting difficulties -frequency of elections .... national elections: every 2 years .... presidential elections: every 4 years 3. VOTING PATTERNS: look at patterns to see the outcome of an election -party identification- depends on how the Republicans or Democrats are doing -issues of the day- if times are hard, then many people want to vote for a change 4. TYPES OF ELECTIONS -primaries [open and closed]- voters choose who their parties candidate will be to run for office ....
