Chinese 155 Monday March 31, 2008 - Daoism, (Dao, Tao) “The Way” o Used by all schools of philosophy and all religions o A distinction is often made between “religious” Daoism and “philosophical” Daoism o Philosophical Daoism begins in pre-imperial times o Religious Daoism can also be seen in pre-imperial times o Religious Daoism becomes organized in Han times - Daoism: 4 streams come together 350-250 BC. Each certainly had a long prior period of development o 1. Philosophical Daoism: the principal Daoist philosophers o 2. Hygiene, or Daoist “yoga”: breathing exercises, physical cultivation, dietary practices, etc. o 3. Five elements and yin-yang o 4. Immortality: Queen Mother of the West; Isles of the Blest - Religious Taoism o Developed from popular religion and philosophical Daoism o Emphasis is on eremitic and mystical aspects o Incorporates popular religious and magical traditions o Influenced by Buddhism 1. A formal “church” with priests, nuns, etc. 2. A “cannon” of “holy” texts
