Notes-Melodrama Monday, February 18, 2008 12:00 PM Vocabulary o Genre Kind Type 4 main genres Farce Melodrama Tragedy drama o Melodrama Nothing mellow about it Usually use it when someone is being extremely dramatic Originates in the 18th century and it is the dominate style in the 19th century Different varieties of melodrama Star wars is an example of a melodrama Element of strong wish fulfillment The world of melodrama o From French melo-drame- "music-drama" o Popular, escapist, sentimental Want to reach a wide audience as apposed to a more specific audience that a tragedy appeals to More straightforward and clear cut in who you are rooting for and who you are going against Tragedies exist in shades of gray, but a melodrama is very black and white More escapist feeling And it really taps into your emotions Very emotionally engaging Tragedies want you to look at the ambiguous ideas, but melodrama is just more bedrock ideas o Clear-cut morality There is good and bad There is no in between Good is always going to triumph over evil in a melodrama o Whole characters They don’t suffer any internal division o External conflict The events stay all on the external No internal conflict of the characters Simplify the self and simplify the universe o Focus on plot o Emotional appeal
