Ryan Linton Economics 201 The purpose Leonard Reed had in mind when he wrote his article was to show that the manufacturing process of anything is very complicated. He does this by explaining the process of making something that seems as simple as the pencil. He also wants people to realize that humans can work together without any assistance from an overseer or supervisor. The intended audience of this article was the government that was taking away the freedoms of manufacturing and was trying to oversee the way things were done like mail delivery. He believes that it is amazing that all of these steps in making a product can be completed without anyone actually overseeing the process. He wants the government to “have faith that free men and women will respond to the Invisible Hand.” In order to show that humans can work together without any assistance was by describing the process of manufacturing a pencil. He shows that making a pencil, just like any other product, involves thousands of steps, and uses the help of millions of people who
