October 2, 2007 Introduction to Biology (II) Laboratory Cellular Respiration in Corn Seedlings Abstract: Cellular respiration, a series of chemical processes that take place within an organism, is an integral part of the make-up and functionality of nearly all living organisms. In the Introduction to Biology (II) laboratory at North Carolina State University, an experiment was performed using corn seedlings that were one day old and three days old to determining the rate of respiration within the said seedlings. It was hypothesized that the three day old seedlings would undergo a higher rate of respiration simply because they have undergone more mitosis than those only one day old, and contain more cells. In order to determine the rates of respiration within the corn seedlings, 30 one day old seedlings, 30 three day old seedlings, and a control group of marbles were washed and placed accordingly into chambers along with potassium chloride, sealed, and placed into a water bath at 29.5 degrees centigrade. Food coloring was placed in the tops of the stopper assemblies of each chamber and an air bubble was observed moving downward as air inside each chamber was used up. It was observed that the 3 day old corn seedlings used up much of the air inside of the chambers, while the one day old seedlings had an unexpected result, that is, the amount of air in the chamber remained unchanged. It was concluded that the data was inconclusive due to the anomaly with the one day old seedlings.
