Estimating Population Sizes Virtual Lab Name/Date/Pd_____________________ Problem: Prediction : Predict how many grasshoppers are living in the 1 acre meadow marked by our flags: __________ List the difficulties you might encounter if you tried to determine the population of grasshoppers by simply looking at the meadow. What are some steps you can take to make a more accurate estimation of the population size? Materials : What materials are needed for this lab? Procedure: 1. Use the insect sweep nets to capture grasshoppers. (And very carefully put the grasshoppers in the jar). Complete this task two more times. 2. Mark all grasshoppers in your jar with a dot of neon orange paint on their upper chest. 3. Record (in Table 1) the number of grasshoppers in the first capture. 4. Release the grasshoppers to the center of the one-acre meadow. 5. Sweep the meadow three more times with the insect sweep nets to capture the grasshoppers. 6. Determine how many grasshoppers you had in the second capture. The count will include marked grasshoppers from the first capture and grasshoppers that have not been captured yet.
