WEEK 5 POP #2 Demographic Transition: Intro Definitions Demographics = study of people o Transition = change Demographic Transition model is a theory that helps explain the structure of a population over time as societies “evolve” o Assumption = all societies want to evolve from an undeveloped status and go through some agricultural and industrial revolution Birth Rate – number of babies being born per 1000 people per year o 14 – US birth rate o 14 – China’s birth rate (more babies here than the US because there’s a bigger population) o 7 – Japanese birth rate o 48 – Ugandan birth rate Death Rate – number of deaths per 1000 people per year o 8 – US o 8 – China o 2 – United Arab Emirates o 20 – Afghanistan Infant Mortality Rate - # of babies that will die before their 1 st birth day per 1000 babies born that year o Japan – 3 o US – 6 o India – 30 o Angola – 180 Life expectancy – average age people live too o Japan – 82 o US – 78 o Bangladesh – 60 o Angola – 38 Fertility Rate – average number of babies born to a woman over her lifetime o US – 2.1 o Japan – 1.3 o India – 3 o Saudi Arabia – 4 o Uganda – 7 Replacement Level – 2.1 babies per woman which will replace the parents who procreated to make them o .1 accounts for kids that live past their first birthday but do not make it to the procreation age o If the fertility rate is lower than the society is getting smaller every year (Japan) o If the fertility rate is higher than society will grow (Uganda)
