Mrigender Virk ID 003268270 5-25-05 LS2 Demo Lab 4: Metabolism Introduction Metabolism is the total of all chemical activity taking place inside an organism. Measuring the rate of this activity can be done by measuring the consumption of oxygen in a closed environment. Oxygen is used for most chemical activity in the body and so the higher your metabolism the higher the rate of ingesting oxygen. Many things can be done to alter the metabolic rate and therefore alter the consumption of oxygen. These changes can be measured and their effect can then be measured by the oxygen percentage in the environment. In this experiment we will be using nicotine as the variable additive and record its effects on goldfish in a salt water tank that is closed to the outside environment. My hypothesis for the experiment is that adding nicotine to the water will cause the fish to slow their metabolic rate and therefore lower their consumption of oxygen. My null hypothesis is that the nicotine being added to the water will have no metabolic affects on the goldfish. Methods and Materials There wasn’t an extensive amount of materials and the method for this lab was very straightforward but had to be followed with caution. Our TA provided us with Borax solution and at his table there was the balance. At our table we had the chamber
