English 0101 is a non-course based intervention designed to help entering college students in a variety of college contexts that require reading, writing, and inquiry. Also designed to dovetail with student reading and writing responsibilities in their other college courses. Students who missed reading and/or writing placement test cut scores by a small percentage will work with developmental faculty and Writing Center tutors to do the following: 1)create reading-response and writing samples, 2)identify strengths and weaknesses in their reading and writing samples, and 3)receive targeted feedback on how to revise their work to demonstrate college readiness in reading and writing. Prerequisites:None What is ENGL 0101,really? Introduction to College Reading & Writing is a non-course based option, or NCBO, and it is an online synchronous course (OSYN). This course will be delivered fully online. Your instructor will communicate with you electronically, and be available to meet as defined on this syllabus. For our section of ENGL 0101, you will have the opportunity to meet with your instructor and peers weekly to discuss writing concepts from your other courses (either ENGL 1301 or about the writing you’re doing in your other courses this semester). Beyond these weekly discussions, you will use this semester to receive feedback from UTRGV’s Writing Center and its student specialists, reflect on that feedback, and complete a beginning, middle, and end-of-semester reflection. I 1
require that you set up and attend at least 3 (three) appointments with the Writing Center (in-person, via Zoom, or using the Writing Center’s “Send Your Assignment” Service). You can also make appointments to meet with me to discuss your progress in the course. When you feel confident you have completed the course’s requirements, you can request an exit interview to talk about whether you need to continue in the NCBO. After the completion of required feedback, submission requirements, and exit interview, you will no longer be required to attend or view weekly class meetings. Of course, you are welcome to work with us for the whole semester, but after meeting the requirements, you will receive a “Pass” for the course. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) for the Writing Program, in which ENGL 1301 is the First Class The following statements describe what we want our students to know, think/value, and do when they finish the First- Year Writing Program and successfully complete 1302 with a "C" or better.
