Psychology 274 Spring 2007 Madigan . 1 PSYCHOLOGY 274 ANALYSIS AND EVALUATION OF DATA IN PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH Fall 2006 Office Hours Th 1-5 MW 8:30 Labs: Th 2 Th 4 F12 Dr. Stephen Madigan SGM 721 213-740-2268 smadigan@usc.edu Required text: Lockhart, R.S. (1998). Introduction to statistics and data analysis . San Francisco: Freeman. Calculator: You will need a calculator with basic statistical functions. It's best to get one that handles "two-value statistics." These are not expensive (Texas Instruments 36X Solar, about $16). By Jan. 17 you will have to demonstrate your skill in finding basic statistical quantities with your calculator. You do this individually during my office hours Th 1-5 SGM 721. Counts as an assignment. Sign up for an appointment (bulletin board SGM 721). Course website at Blackboard: Announcements, data sets, sample tests etc, Labs. These are an integral part of the course. In them you will learn how to use SPSS ( Statistical Package for the Social Sciences ) to organize and analyze data and create statistical graphics and reports. This is a very useful skill. Assignments : These will include data analysis and the preparation of brief reports and a variety of other course-relevant tasks. Late penalty : 20% per day. Tests: There will be three tests and a final examination. These will consist of multiple choice, short-answer, and computation-problem solving sections, plus take-home questions. Make-up tests : for documented reasons only.
