How to Write a Definition - A definition answers the question, “What is it?” - The essential purpose of “definition” is to provide clarity, through decreasing any abstract ideas, or fuzzy, controversial parts of a whole. B. Begin with a Formal Definition - Formal definition places a word in a general class than shows how the word differs from others. Word General Class How Word Differs Miracle An event or action That contradicts natural laws Pedant A person Who exhibits scholarship ostentatiously To succor To render help In times of distress - Define a word through these categories to specify meaning. - Sometimes it is useful to define a word by discussing its origin. - Science writer, Isaac Asimob defines botulism by referring to its etymology. Goes on to talk about the word being derived from “clostridium,” (Little Spindle, Latin) and “botulinum,” (Sausage, Latin).
