Unformatted text preview: Lecture Date: Monday, September 10, 2007 Announcements: O Any conflicts with the prelim on 10/4/2007, please report to [email protected] 0 Reading Assignments: Chapters 3,4 1. Atomic Weight A. Consider the following example: 12C weighs 12.0 1. It contains 6 neutrons, 6 protons and 6 electrons 2. Neutron has mass 1.0087, proton has mass 10073 and electron has 0.000549 B. 9Be has 5 neutrons, 4 protons, and 4 electrons 1. Net mass: (5* 1.0087) + (4*10073) = 9.0749 2. Actual mass: 9.0122 3. 9.0749—9.0122=0.0627. (This is the missing mass) (Approximately 1%) (Too big for experimental error) 4. So there is a weighing device for atoms called the Mass Spectrometer II. Isotopes: A. Species which have the same proton count but different neutron count are called Isotopes. 1. 35C1 has 17 protons and 18 neutrons Therefore mass =34.96885 2. 37Cl has 17 protons and 20 neutrons Therefore mass = 36.96590 3. Abundances for the above 2 isotopes are 75.785 and 24.22% respectively. 4. Average Mass: (34.96885 *0.7575) + (36.96590*0.2422) = 35.452 ...

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
