Unformatted text preview: SEX, GENDER, AND SOCEITY EXAM 2 CHAPTERS REVIEW R&C Ch 5 (Pg 99-118) What are two purposes of education? 1) To keep us in our respective places. 2) To equip students with the knowledge and skills they need to fill various role in their society. What is the formal curriculum? Hidden curriculum?-The formal curriculum is the required knowledge for students, such as subjects; reading, writing, math, etc.-The hidden curriculum is the subtle teaching of viewing the world in particular ways, gender roles, society, class, race, and what to expect for themselves. **Be able to briefly describe who has been excluded from formal education and why. Students who have been excluded from formal education tend to be poor minorities. Be able to explain the process by which our culture decided to educate women. Upper-class white women had been educated since early times (usually in their homes) but learned far less than men. With increasing industrialization in the U.S., basic literary and numeracy skills were very important. How do boys’ and girls’ experiences differ in elementary school? How do race and class play a role in this?-Boys: get more attention, can call out, more engages, more academically challenged, praised for intellectual quality of work, get awards “best thinker,” “eager learner,” “most scientific,” more often in special ed.-Girls: calling out is inappropriate, praised for being congenial and neat, awarded “all around sweetheart,” “cutest personality,” “best manners”-Race and Class: minorities more often in special education, different social behaviors enforced, awarded for different things, etc. Who is most likely to be a member of our schools’ administration? What are the consequences of this? Although most teachers and aides are women, they are underrepresented in the upper management of school administration. Men are more likely to be on schools’ administration, with consequences such as effects of students gender- role perceptions, ect. How do boys’ and girls’ experiences differ in high school? How do race and class play a role in this?-Boys: popularity and athleticism is most important, social acceptance also based on good verbal and physical fighting skills, good humor, risk taking, and defying norms of politeness, masculinity, aggression, competitiveness, ect. -Girls: physical attractiveness is most important, athletic=unfeminine, stylish, walk fine line of stylish and slutty, passive....
