BSCI 2300 001 Fall 2007 Final Study Guide Radiant barriers – what are they, what do they look like, where are they found Radiant barriers reduce the flow of solar hear Often they are made by laminating an aluminum foil sheet to a paper product, they are installed above insulation in roof Insulation – the types, where they are applied, how they are applied, the characteristics pros/cons of each type Glass fiber batts blankets The glass particles will not absorb moisture Batts are precut to fit between either joists or studs Blankets are cut from a roll and have to be cut to the right size Furring Strips-used with batts and blankets, is a thin wood strip typically ¾” to 1 ¾” that is nailed to concrete or CMU’s to create a cavity wall so thinner batts and blankets can be applied Loose fill-either blown or poured Vermiculite-naturally occurring mineral that has glass like structure (often poured in CMU’s as an insulation Loose fill settles over time Often applied in roofs, attics, and in CMU’s Foamed in Place-Insulated foam that is applied similarly to loose fill but become rigid and hard after insulation usually blown from a hose Rigid Board-Sometimes foam component, adds rigidity to frame, often vapor retarder, laminated to face ICF-Insulated concrete forms- forms that have insulation value that are used in cast in place concrete construction and left in place after concrete is poured

Thermal Bridges-when materials in building assembly furnish a way for heat to flow easily through an otherwise well insulated assembly Thermal Breaks- a strip of insulating material that is inserted into a building assembly to prevent rapid heat conduction through dense highly conductive materials such as metals and masonry R Value vs. U Value R value- rating for materials effectiveness in retarding heat flow U Value- U=1/R Ability to allow heat to pass through Vapor retarders – what are they, where do they go, how are they measured Measured in perms They prevent moisture from penetrating wall from inside and condensating on the cold side of the wall and causing mold etc Types: Kraft paper (1 perm or less) Standard Foil (.05 perms or less) FSK-Foil Scrim Kraft (.02 perms or less) Vapor retarders are placed on the WARM-IN-WINTER side of insulation Roof ventilation – options, parts of system, pros/cons Attic ventilation Types: Soffit vent Gable vent – if installed on both sides can create a wind tunnel effect
