2 OBESITY IN MOUNT GREENWOOD Introduction The community of Mount Greenwood, IL is following the trend that the rest of the United States is following, which is obesity. This project aims to help reverse this trend by teaching the residents about healthy eating. Various studies have shown that the accessibility of fast food as opposed to fresh produce can lead to obesity. Obesity leads to many diseases and unnecessary expenses. Through teaching the community about healthy eating and promoting a healthy lifestyle, the projects goal is to curve the obesity epidemic in Mount Greenwood, IL and then spread out to neighboring communities. Problem The community of Mount Greenwood, IL is located on the southern most tip of Chicago. It has a variety of different races, with Caucasian being the majority. During the windshield survey, the community was observed. There were four hospitals within a ten-mile radius, plenty of transportation options, grocery stores, schools for all grades, and recreational fields. The leading communicable disease in the community is chickenpox, which is also the leading disease for the state of Illinois. Heart disease is the leading non-communicable disease for the community and also the state. The windshield survey also made our group notice that there are many fast-food restaurants in the community. This is a problem because obesity is very prominent in the United States. Healthy eateries were not identified during the survey, which means that eating healthy is not an option for the people of Mount Greenwood. Purpose The purpose of this proposal is to help raise awareness of the growing problem of obesity in the local community. This is a growing problem and if left untreated or ignored can turn into a bigger problem by raising the prevalence of diseases such as heart disease, hypertension, and diabetes. This problem has stemmed from many different causes, including lack of exercising, and the increased amount of fast food items that are

3 OBESITY IN MOUNT GREENWOOD available throughout the community. Another main purpose is to help educate the surrounding community about different ways they can get proactive and help combat this growing disease. By educating them on the importance of eating a proper and healthy diet we can help reduce the incidence of obesity in the community and cut back on overall health problems at the same time. This can also be done by explaining and educating them on the importance of exercising daily to help burn off as much energy as they consume. With increased knowledge on this topic we can equip the people of the community with the tools needed to combat this disease.
