Aaron Stevens Essay #2 English 104 - 532 A Struggle for The Ultimate Goal Literacy in America is a gift available to citizens through public education. However, it wasn’t always this way. In The Narrative of the Life of FrederickDouglass, An American Slave, readers are introduced to Douglass’s narration of his struggle in search of literacy. In reading The Narrative , one empathizes with Douglass for his thirst of knowledge to bring him his ultimate goal, freedom. Today, education still holds the roots of goal setting for individuals, for nothing is possible with an empty and unmoved mind. Many students seek higher education upon completion of high school in hopes of earning their ultimate goal, a college degree, which will essentially make them more employable at a higher salary. Educated then graduated, but unable to find a job. Most every student who believes their college degree will bring them greater fortune has potentially fallen into a trap that Wendy Ryden refers to as the “literacy myth,” or “the unfounded assumption
