Duration: 20 years from filing. How obtained: Application must be approved by the US Patent and Trademark Office. Trademarks: Coverage: Words/symbols that distinguish goods or services of one entity from others. Protection: Right to exclude use of a similar mark on products in a way that is likely to confuse the purchasing public. Duration: Indefinite if use continues. How obtained: Protection is automatic, but marks can be registered with the US PTO. Copyrights: Coverage: Original works of authorship, including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works.
