What is Globalization?
Globalization & Patterns of Movement of People
1) Immigration/Migration:
 Migration can be attributed to the age-old search for a better life in richer countries- is
the movement of people looking for employment
 Remittances are keeping families alive in different countries and are a part of
globalization: banks are set up to make remittances possible
 Anny Hefti says it is the globalization of communications technology- Mass media, tv,
film, video has triggered the dream for an “easy life”
 Due to this- migration has become attractive
2) Globalization and Tourism:
 Tourism is worlds largest industry
 Ecotourism, ethnic tourism, “roots” and heritage tourism are some types of tourism

 Developing countries with financial struggles turn to tourism in the hopes that it will
attract foreign exchange
 It is easier for middle class nations to travel VS lower class nations (Canada VS Mexico)
 Flip Side to Globalization and Tourism: is legal and illegal emigration from developing
countries to more affluent regions like U.S, Canada, European Union
3) Globalization and Women’s Work:
 New female immigrants struggle to find employment
 When they do get a job, it is usually lower pay and more work
 Education is critical in order for women in Canada and the rest of the world to compete
as equals in the professional world- school debt is higher for women b/c they are paid
less
 Recognizing the conditions (health and safety) and inequalities in wage that are present
in the workplace
 People want to change this: is done through protests
Globalization: The Issues:
 Movement of goods, services and capital: world trade
 Globalization impacts the world environment, national, and local cultures and governments
Global Organizations:
 Trade is unfair: works for the advantages of some and disadvantages of others

