Arria Owlia – apo223 Bio 206L – Lloyd – 50105 02/16/08 – 1:30 PM Lab 5 – Physiology of the Crayfish, Cardiovascular Physiology Lab, Living Circulation Lab Purpose:  To become familiar with the relationships between oxygen, heart rate, and the circulatory system in various  species. Abstract:  This lab procedure had three separate parts. The first part involved properly fastening a crayfish to an  apparatus that separates its anterior and posterior regions in order to determine the mL of water travelling from one side  to the other. With the crayfish submerged in water, we first used a high O 2  concentration, then displaced it with N 2 , then  returned to a high O 2  concentration. We used this method to determine the amount of O 2  being delivered to the crayfish  with the various concentrations. We were also to create a graph with the data we gathered. The second portion of the lab  involved measuring our own pulse during different periods (at rest, holding breath, immersed in water, after exertion,  immersed after exertion, 5 min. after exertion). We were to draw conclusions based on logical human physiology. The  final portion involved us observing the blood flow in the tail of a goldfish. We had to determine arteries from veins, and the  relative rate of blood flow in the respected vessels. This lab was made to cover the important evolutionary advancements  int the cardiovascular system in the three species.
