Try to memorize everything Work HW hours before it is due Skip class Skip HW Never ask for help Only study the night before exams EVERYTHING SEEKS OUT THE LOWEST ENERGY STATE MUST BREAK BONDS FIRST, THEN FORM NEW BONDS ADD ENERGY (LIKE WITH A FLAME) OR ADD A CATALYST TO SPEED SHT UP THERMODYNAMICS – Tells what can and can’t happen, what is the most stable? KINETICS – Deals with how things happen, what is fast, what is slow, what actually takes place. MOLECULES AND COMPOUNDS ARE MORE STABLE THAN JUST ATOMS ALONE. HYDROGEN ECONOMY – Use H2 as a fuel “zero” emission. There is no H2, where do we get it? Electrons are strange and wonderful things They obey different rules. They obey quantum mechanics rather than classical mechanics. What’s strange about electrons? We don’t understand them very well. We try to categorize them as things we know i.e. particles (ball w/charge). STM runs across a surface and detects the surface height/etc like electrons. Electrons make a ripple formation when inside a barrier (i.e. iron barrier made on copper surface) Electrons are neither waves nor particles, they are just strange quantum mechanical things with properties of both. What is light, or Electromagnetic radiation? It is a wave with oscillating electric and magnetic fields, thus EM. Constructive/destructive interference occurs, important phenomena of waves. Happens with electrons. Electrons interfere with each other. Anti-bonding = destructive. Bonding = con. Properties of waves Described by: Wavelength – length (m). one peak/trough to the next consecutive peak/trough. Frequency – time required for consecutive peaks/troughs. Inversely related to W C = WxF = wavelength x frequency = 3.0x10^8 m/s EM Spectrum: High Freq -> Low Freq Gamma Rays – X-Rays – Ultraviolet – Visible Light – Infrared – Microwaves – FM – AM -12 -10 -8 -7 -4 -2 2 4 What is the freq of light w/wavelength 500nm? 500nm = 500x10^-9m = 5x10^-7m Freq = C/W = 3x10^8 m/s / 5x10^-7 m = 6x10^14 Hz What is particle like about light? It’s energy is related to its frequency. It appears to come in little packets of energy called photons. *E = hv, h = 6.626 x 10^-34 Js Photoelectric effect – After a threshold energy, shining high freq light at a metal will cause electrons to shoot off at different velocities. Ionization Energy. Interactions occur on a one photon: one electron process. X-rays have high freq/high energy and can harm you through interacting with your DNA and trying
