Sex tourism is when people travel to different locations to engage in sexual activity with prostitutes. Although the United Nations is opposed to it, many wealthy tourists still take part in it due to its reduced costs and availability (in prostitution, lower age of consent, and even child prostitution. Many people may think that prostitution is illegal, however in red-light districts, such as Amsterdam, it is allowed. Although men are usually the targets for sex tourism sites, there are also female sex tourism locations as well (i.e. Italy, Turkey, Spain and the Caribbean). Female sex tourism differs from male sex tourism in a sense that men pay money for compensation, and women usually give gifts, cash, clothing, meals, or sometimes don’t give any form of compensation at all. When hearing the idea “sex tourism”, many probably think of something humorous, exciting, even adventurous, but what many people don’t realize, is that there’s a very dark, disturbing side to it. Most of the countries that have sex tourism destinations are full of poverty and unemployment. In a lot of cases, recruiters go around to families trying to convince the children to go with them to the city for “better” lifestyles, and job opportunities. Once the children agree, they get to the city and are forced into prostitution for much of their lives. In other, more disturbing cases, families are so poor and in desperate need of money, that they actually sell their own children into the sex trade, or even prostitute them themselves. Internet has also been a factor in the increased interest of child prostitution. There are numerous websites for sex tourism, where people write descriptive stories of the sexual encounters. I read on one site where a man tried to give reason for the things he does to children, and to try to make it seem normal. He claims, “Sex is a natural thing
