Post-Laboratory Questions 1. Which method of distillation, simple or unpacked column, is better? Why? Unpacked column is better because there is a greater volume produced at the temperature range at which acetone boils. The amount collected in the first fraction by the unpacked column is closer to 15ml which is the amount of acetone the solution contains. Therefore we see that more acetone was separated from the mixture. Unpacked Column Distillation is more effective because the height increase makes the evaporated substances travel a greater distance before condensing. While this is happening, water that has vaporized will recondense because of its higher boiling point, makin the acetone collected more "pure". 2.
