4-2-08 Psychology of Women Notes for the Final RC Theory Revisited 3 crucial aspects of a girls relationship with her mother children need both parents to help them develop normally Surrey- pg 52, definition of self A construction of reality that illuminates the purpose of our lives Difference in the way we engender children is that we are much more emphatic about influencing boys to be autonomous and independent. A girls primary experience is one of relationality. There is an early interacting self in infancy for both girls and boys Determinants of Gender Chromosome level- XX is female and XY is male Hormones- can cause differences at the chromosome level during pregnancy Gonads at 7-8 weeks: turn into testes or ovaries Internal Reproductive System 8-12 weeks External Genitalia begins to form Sex Assignment- circumcision accidents (for example) can influence parents to choose to raise the boy as a girl (this can cause big psychological issues to occur around the time of puberty) Relational Violence Mean girls in adolescence and childhood Hidden culture of aggression among young girls (open expression not encouraged, but talking about people, manipulation, exclusion, etc is used) Being in sports helps boys manage and express their anger, whereas girls have no outlet to get rid of anger Conclusions Researchers have about relational violence o To bond together against someone emphasizes the bonding experience o Women are envious of the power that men have, so they use relational anger as a way to be powerful Mary Pipher We start feuding and disconnecting with our parents when adolescent boys and girls really need support 4-9-08
