COMM 125 April 14, 2008 New Media -Same Corporate model as in traditional media? Or does it create a potential for a public sphere? -Why might new media be different? 1. Technology makes a difference; technological effects may influence content, the shape of information systems, reorganize the institutions that deliver the information, change the nature of the audience -Effects of Print Media (dominant media): Create a permanent record// Not Visual Media// Some have long and detailed reports of events - Uses and Gratifications - you’re not going to get the information if you don’t want it; some will want to get newspapers, some will not. Information is available to those who want newspapers; different effects on different groups of people. - Diffusion of Information - some people can become informed; but since some people don’t read news papers, different outcomes for different groups -Information takes time to get to audience. Must wait around for information. -If the story is of immediate importance, newspapers may not be able to provide information in a timely way. Ex) breaking weather story -advantages of having to wait: newspapers have time to make corrections and add needed perspective; audience may make more temporal, careful judgment, as a result
