Trapped in His Body 1 Jared Restivo Anatomy and Physiology December 3, 2007 Trapped in His Body: Bauby’s Story Most individuals are born with the ability to use all five senses . Often people are ungrateful for what they are given, and do not truly appreciate the value of living . In “The Diving Bell and the Butterfly” by Jean-Dominique Bauby (1997), Jean-Dominique was a normal middle-aged man, when one day he suffered a cerebrovascular accident, otherwise known as a massive stroke . He went into a twenty day coma, and when he came out, he was a mute and practically entirely paralyzed, with bodily control over just his left eye . However, his mind still worked fine, a condition known as Locked-in Syndrome . Rather than give up internally to his external problems, he wrote his memoirs in this novel . Locked-in Syndrome is a rare neurological disorder . The afflicted becomes a quadriplegic, with complete paralysis of all the muscles of the body, except for those that control the eyes (National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke) . Individuals with locked-in syndrome are conscious and can think and reason, but are unable to speak or move . The only means of communication involves the only muscles an afflicted person can use; one with Locked-in Syndrome can communicate with their eyes, blinking in certain patterns .
