Jared Restivo PSY 100 December 12, 2007 In Chapter 15, there was an emphasis on mental disorders . I was especially fascinated by the idea that schizophrenia is not necessarily one disorder, instead an umbrella term that accounts disturbances in most psychological extents, including thought, perception, behavior, language, communication, and emotion . It definitely changes my perception on the disorder, because it seems society has painted a clear picture of what schizophrenia is, with people often referring to aggressive or lunatic-like individuals as “schizo’s” . Another major psychological disorder was depression, which is caused when neurotransmitters cannot properly attach to neurons

It shows how serious even the slightest changes in the brain can affect a person . A little chemical adjustment can make an individual someone else completely. I was a little confused at the end of chapter 15 when it explained psychological diseases in other cultures . While the perception of a disease may be different, to not view it as the same type of disorder seems to take away credibility from the American ideals of psychology, where it seems anyone can get diagnosed with a disorder and receive medication ....
