Sage Smith 5-2-08 Ren/Rev Dr. Mitra The other event I went to on campus is the video the mission that we had to go watch for Dr. White’s class. This movie was made in 1986 and is about the Jesuits that go into South America and establish missions and communities. The main character is Father Gabriel who enters into South America to establish a mission with the Guarani Indians. He is then joined by a reformed Portuguese mercenary named Rodrigo Mendez. The Portugese colonials are the ones that persecute the people who go to these missions and Mendez and Gabriel try to defend these people. The Vatican tells the priests to abandon the mission because it is too dangerous for them. A group of Spanish and Portuguese soldiers attack the mission and kill all the priests and the tribe’s people. This

Unformatted text preview: movie had an impact on me because I went to a Jesuit high school. I went to Brophy College Prep which is an all boys Jesuit school in Phoenix. I had three Jesuits as teachers at my time in high school. These Jesuits were some of the nicest people I have ever met in my entire life. I feel like they live life to the fullest and dont let anything bother them. I also learned about St. Ignatius and being a man for others. I also learned about AMDG (live life to the fullest) which has been a model for me. The movie the Mission let me think deeper about life and realize that there are missionaries and people trying to spread the word of God. This also is very dangerous and they put their lives on the line every day to help people....
