It speeds up erosion down- current. The beach directly behind a jetty will not get as much sand washed down from the jetty-protected stretch. At the same time, it is getting just as much erosion as it did before. The same amount going out, and not as much coming in results in a much faster rate of shrinkage. Breakwaters They are appropriate for use in areas where poor soil conditions make a fixed breakwater impossible and are less expensive to install than fixed breakwaters.
