What is meant by the “Life magazine syndrome?” The “Life magazine syndrome” means that Sears used to be the store to go to for all types of services that was given at an affordable price that the rural areas could afford. Sears used to be the go to mall for everyone within a 15-minute commute. Sears became a generalized store where they provided so many services that they did not have a brand identity and became outdated when smaller specialized businesses provided cheaper and faster solutions. The real definition of the “Life magazine syndrome” is the fall of the generalist and added value of the specialist. 2. From a marketing perspective, what is Sears’ most significant problem? Identifying the core brand and the customer it needs to influence, that is the task at hand.
