- 3 - 1. (25 points) Ammonium cyanate and ammonium isocyanate played an important role in the discovery of isomerism by chemists Justus Liebig and Friedrich Wöhler, who demonstrated that the two salts shared the same elemental formula but had quite different chemical properties. The salts both contain anions with only three atoms (C, N, and O). It was subsequently shown that the cyanate anion has the connectivity O-C-N and that the isocyanate anion has the connectivity O-N-C. (a) (10 points)
