What is metamorphism? Metamorphism is a series of changes in the texture, mineralogy, and chemical composition of a rock due to the effect of heat, pressure, and fluids. The changes result from environmental conditions different from those under which the rock was formed originally and represent an attempt to re-establish equilibrium with the new surrounding The resulting rock is a metamorphic rock.

What cause metamorphism? 1. Temperature Geothermal gradient- temperature in the earth increases with depth, at a rate of about 30 degrees Celsius per kilometer New minerals will form under high temperature Ex: clay mica garnet Minerals will grow larger and form bonds.
